What a cross border car service actually is

It is a chartered private vehicle, booked for your group alone, that is permitted to carry passengers across an international border. The distinction that matters is exclusivity. A scheduled bus sells individual seats and stops where its timetable says. A cross border car service sells the whole vehicle, so the pickup address, the departure time and the route belong to you.

Three things make the border leg different from an ordinary out of town trip. The driver carries commercial documentation for the vehicle. Every passenger needs their own travel document, which we confirm at booking rather than at the booth. And the crossing itself adds time that nobody can promise away, because the queue at the bridge belongs to the border agencies, not to us.

What you get in exchange for that is a single continuous journey. Luggage stays in the vehicle. Nobody changes platforms at midnight. A group of fourteen arrives together instead of scattered across three flights. For families with young children, for corporate teams on a schedule, and for anyone carrying equipment, that continuity is usually the whole reason to book it.

We operate from a Toronto base, so a Canadian pickup starts close to the vehicle and an American pickup carries the cost of positioning the vehicle south before your trip begins. That is why a Buffalo pickup and a Toronto pickup are not always the same price for the same distance, and the booking form shows you the real number before you commit to anything.

Toronto to Buffalo airport

Toronto to Buffalo Niagara International Airport is the single most requested cross border run we do, and the reason is money. Fares out of BUF are frequently far below the equivalent Pearson fare, so Canadians drive an hour and a half south to fly. The drive is roughly 150 km from downtown Toronto and takes about two hours before border time.

A sedan on that route is approximately $380 one way from Pearson, an SUV approximately $650, and a 14 seat Sprinter approximately $1,500. Those are guide prices from our published rate card, in Canadian dollars, before HST and gratuity. For a family of four with luggage, the SUV usually works out close to the cost of parking at BUF for a week, which is why the airport run converts so well.

The practical advice on this route is to build in border time. We recommend leaving four hours before your departure time rather than the three you would allow for Pearson. The Peace Bridge and the Lewiston Queenston Bridge both queue unpredictably on Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings and any long weekend. Your driver monitors the wait times and picks the shorter crossing on the day.

People search for a bus from Toronto to Buffalo airport more than any other phrasing on this route, and scheduled coach options do exist. They run to a fixed timetable, drop at a fixed point, and put your luggage in a shared bay. A private vehicle costs more and collects you from your own front door at the hour your flight actually requires. Which one is right depends entirely on whether you are travelling alone or as a group, and the group maths is covered further down this page.

Buffalo to Toronto car service

The northbound trip is a genuinely different service and we price it separately. A Buffalo to Toronto car service collects you at BUF arrivals, at a Buffalo hotel or at a private address, and drives you into Ontario. Common destinations are Toronto Pearson for a connecting flight, downtown Toronto hotels, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Mississauga.

This direction matters for two groups. American visitors flying into Buffalo because the fare was cheaper, then continuing to Toronto. And Canadians coming home, landing at BUF and wanting one vehicle to the door rather than a shuttle, a taxi and a wait. Both want the same thing, which is somebody standing at the kerb who already knows where they are going.

Because our fleet is based in the Toronto area, a Buffalo pickup includes the cost of bringing the vehicle south to meet you. The booking form calculates that automatically and shows the total before you pay, so there is no separate positioning fee discovered later. Enter the American address as your pickup and the Canadian address as your dropoff, and the price adjusts.

For arrivals, give us the flight number. If the aircraft is late the driver waits, and if it is early the driver is already there. Buffalo Niagara is a small enough airport that meeting a passenger is straightforward, and your driver waits with the vehicle at the kerb rather than inside the terminal.

Toronto to Cleveland

Toronto to Cleveland is approximately 460 km and takes about five hours of driving before the border. Guide prices from our rate card are approximately $940 for a sedan, approximately $1,450 for an SUV and approximately $2,720 for a 14 seat Sprinter, one way, before HST and gratuity.

Most of the Cleveland bookings we see fall into three buckets. Medical travel to the Cleveland Clinic, which is the single most common reason Canadians make this trip by road. Sports groups heading to a game. And corporate teams who want to arrive together and work on the way rather than splitting across connecting flights.

For medical trips specifically, the private vehicle earns its cost. A patient who is unwell does not want an airport, a security line and a rental counter. The vehicle collects them at home, stops when they need to stop, and delivers them to the clinic entrance. We handle a steady volume of these and they are booked further ahead than anything else on this page.

There is no direct passenger train from Toronto to Cleveland, which is a question people ask constantly. Amtrak does not run a through service on that corridor, so the realistic options are driving, flying with a connection, or a scheduled coach with at least one change. A private vehicle is the only option that is genuinely door to door.

Toronto to Detroit car service

Toronto to Detroit is approximately 370 km and takes about four hours before border time. The crossing is either the Ambassador Bridge or the Detroit Windsor Tunnel, and your driver picks whichever is moving on the day. The tunnel is often quicker for downtown Detroit destinations, and the bridge is better for anything toward the airport.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport is a frequent destination on this run, along with downtown hotels, the automotive plants in the surrounding counties and the sports venues. Corporate travel dominates this route in a way it does not on the Buffalo run, and a lot of it is same day return, which the booking form supports directly.

Because Windsor sits on the Canadian side of the crossing, a Detroit trip can also be booked as a Windsor pickup if part of your group is already there. Tell us in the special requests field and we will build the route with the extra stop rather than running two vehicles.

Toronto to Niagara Falls New York

Toronto to Niagara Falls on the American side is approximately 130 km and takes about ninety minutes before the border. It is the shortest cross border run we do, and it is the one people most often underestimate, because the Canadian and American sides of the falls are entirely different trips.

The American side gives you Goat Island, the Cave of the Winds and the state park. The Canadian side gives you the panoramic view. Visitors who want both need to cross, and crossing on foot over the Rainbow Bridge with luggage is far less pleasant than it sounds. A private vehicle that waits while you spend the afternoon on one side and then drives you back is the comfortable version.

This route also serves a steady stream of shopping trips to the outlet centres just over the border, and day trips that combine the falls with a winery stop on the way home. Both work well as a return booking with waiting time built in, because the vehicle stays with you rather than being dispatched elsewhere between legs.

Toronto to New York City

Toronto to New York City is approximately 800 km and takes nine to ten hours of driving. It sits inside our 1,500 km service radius, so the booking form prices it on screen like any other run. Send it through and you see the total before you pay.

The trips that make sense by road on this corridor are the ones where flying does not solve the problem. Groups of eight or more, where individual airfares plus airport transfers at both ends overtake the cost of a single vehicle. Trips with equipment, instruments or samples that airlines handle badly. And journeys with stops along the way, because a Toronto to New York run can pick up in Niagara, Buffalo and Syracuse without anybody buying a new ticket.

For anything at this distance we plan driver hours properly. A single driver cannot legally or safely run nine hours, deliver a group and turn around, so an overnight stay is built into the quote and shown to you. That is the honest version of long distance road travel, and it is why the price is a real quote rather than a number from a calculator.

What do I need to cross the US border from Canada by car

Every passenger aged 16 and over needs a valid passport, an enhanced driver’s licence, or a trusted traveller card such as NEXUS. Canadian citizens under 16 may present a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship instead, including a photocopy or certified copy. Those are the United States Customs and Border Protection rules for a land crossing, and they apply in a private vehicle exactly as they apply in your own car.

A few points that catch groups out. Permanent residents of Canada who are not Canadian citizens usually need a visa or an ESTA depending on their nationality, and they should confirm their own status well before the travel date. Children travelling without both parents should carry a letter of consent from the absent parent, because officers do ask. And anyone with a past refusal or a criminal record should resolve their admissibility before booking, not at the booth.

On the $250 visa integrity fee that has been widely reported, Canadian citizens travelling as visitors are exempt, because the fee applies to travellers who require a nonimmigrant visa. Canadian permanent residents who do require a visa are affected. If that describes anybody in your group, check the current position before you travel.

The vehicle side is our responsibility. The driver carries the commercial paperwork, the passenger manifest and the insurance documentation. What we cannot do is answer for you at the window. Every passenger speaks for themselves, and the officer may ask where you are going and why. Straight answers move the queue along.

One thing worth saying plainly. A driver cannot carry your documents for you and cannot guarantee admission. Entry is decided by the officer at the booth, every time, for every passenger. If somebody in your group is refused, the trip does not continue for that person, and no operator can change that.

How much does a cross border car service cost

Guide prices below are one way from Toronto Pearson, in Canadian dollars, before HST at 13 percent and gratuity. They come from our published rate card and they are approximate, because a real quote depends on the exact pickup, the date and the group size.

Larger vehicles are quoted per trip rather than from a grid. A 27 seat mini coach starts at approximately $1,000, a 56 seat coach at approximately $1,800, and both are priced by distance once the route crosses the border. Group bookings through the online form show the exact total, including gratuity, the processing fee and tax, before you authorize anything.

What is included in every price: the vehicle, the professional driver, fuel and insurance, and waiting time with your group where the booking is a return. What is not included: parking, venue passes, and tolls where a route uses them. Nothing is added after the fact without you seeing it first.

Bus, train, rideshare or private car

The honest answer is that a private vehicle is not always the right choice, and the number of people travelling decides it more than anything else.

The arithmetic is straightforward. A Sprinter to Buffalo airport at approximately $1,500 carrying fourteen people is roughly $107 each, door to door, with luggage handled and no timetable. The same trip alone is a scheduled coach ticket and a taxi at either end. Somewhere around three or four travellers the private vehicle stops being a luxury and starts being the sensible option.

The rideshare point deserves emphasis because it strands people regularly. Drivers on both sides of the border are frequently unwilling or not permitted to cross, and an app that accepts your booking in Toronto is no guarantee of a car in Buffalo at midnight. If your return depends on finding a ride at an American airport, book it before you leave.

Which vehicle seats your group

Vehicle choice is decided by headcount and luggage, in that order. Every vehicle below crosses the border and every one of them is available in both directions.

• Executive SUV, 6 seats. Families and small business groups. Six passengers with luggage is tight, so four or five with full suitcases is the comfortable number.
• Regular Sprinter, 14 seats. The most booked vehicle on cross border work. Fourteen seats and real luggage space, which is why it dominates the airport runs.
• Jet Sprinter, 9 seats. Captain’s chairs and more room per passenger. The choice when the group is small but the journey is long, or when people need to work on the way.
• 27 seat mini coach. A whole department, a wedding party or two friend groups travelling together. Overhead storage plus a luggage bay.
• 56 seat coach. The full crew, with a restroom on board, which matters on the Cleveland and New York runs.

For groups above 56 we run more than one vehicle and keep them together on the road, so the whole party arrives within a few minutes of each other. Tell us the headcount and we will build the formation rather than making you book twice.

How the booking works

Booking takes about a minute and the price appears before you pay anything. Pick the vehicle, choose the direction, enter both addresses, and the exact total including gratuity, processing fee and tax appears in the summary panel.

Your card is authorized, not charged. We place a hold, confirm the vehicle and the driver, and only then capture the payment. If we cannot cover the trip, the hold is released and you have paid nothing. That order of operations matters on group bookings, because it means you are never out of pocket for a vehicle that was not available.

Online booking needs at least 12 hours notice. We cover Ontario on the Canadian side and any US address within 1,500 km of our Niagara or Windsor crossing, which reaches New York, Chicago and everything closer. Further out, the same form still takes your request, it just returns a quote by email instead of a checkout link.

Cancellations are refunded in full more than 48 hours before pickup, at 50 percent between 24 and 48 hours, and not at all inside 24 hours. Those terms are the same in both directions and for every vehicle.
