Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)

Pearson is Canada’s busiest airport, 20 km northwest of downtown Toronto in Mississauga, split across two public terminals: Terminal 1 (58 gates) handles the bulk of international and Star Alliance traffic, and Terminal 3 (46 gates) covers domestic, transborder and several international carriers. Billy Bishop Airport (YTZ): Toronto’s Downtown Island Airport

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport sits on the Toronto Islands, effectively adjacent to downtown, the closest airport to the financial district of any on this list. There is no meaningful drive time from the mainland: a 240-metre pedestrian tunnel with moving sidewalks has connected the island to the foot of Bathurst Street since July 2015, and a free ferry runs every 15 minutes from 5:15 a.m. to midnight for anyone who prefers the crossing.

Porter Airlines runs YTZ as its primary hub, with Air Canada Express and Propair also operating, flying to Boston, Chicago, Montreal, New York-LaGuardia, Ottawa, Washington-Dulles, Halifax and other regional cities from a single passenger terminal. As of March 10, 2026, Billy Bishop opened its own US CBP preclearance facility, the 10th in Canada and the only one besides Pearson on this list, and both Air Canada and Porter have expanded transborder routes as a result.

John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport sits 64 km southwest of Toronto and 11 km from downtown Hamilton, roughly 57 minutes to an hour and 12 minutes from the city depending on traffic. Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF)

Region of Waterloo International Airport sits in Breslau, between Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph, roughly 100 km and 75 to 90 minutes west of Toronto depending on the route. A $44 million expansion completed in 2023 added baggage handling capacity and larger departure lounges across its four gates, one international, one domestic arrivals and two domestic departures.

Flair Airlines flies Calgary, Halifax and seasonal Edmonton out of YKF, WestJet runs Calgary year-round plus seasonal Cancun and Punta Cana, and Sunwing adds seasonal Caribbean charters. London International Airport (YXU)

London International Airport sits about 9.3 km northeast of downtown London, Ontario, roughly 173 km and 2 hours 15 minutes from Toronto by car. It is a mature, stable regional airport. its terminal was last substantially renovated in 2003, and in 2025 it handled 112,009 aircraft movements and 297,822 passengers, modest next to Pearson but a genuinely active regional hub for southwestern Ontario.

Air Canada Express flies year-round to Toronto Pearson and WestJet year-round to Calgary, with Air Transat and WestJet adding seasonal charter service to Cancun and Punta Cana. Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF): The Cross-Border Option

Buffalo Niagara International Airport is a US airport in Cheektowaga, New York, about 11 miles from downtown Buffalo and a common cross-border alternative for Niagara-region travellers chasing lower US airfares. Historically as much as a third to nearly half of BUF passengers have been Canadian, and the single modern terminal, expanded to 24 gates in 2001, runs over 100 scheduled flights a day on Southwest, JetBlue, American, Delta, Frontier and United.

Drive time from Niagara Falls, Ontario to BUF is commonly cited at 45 minutes to an hour, but that figure assumes no delay at the Rainbow Bridge or Lewiston-Queenston Bridge crossing, and wait times are genuinely unpredictable, so treat any quoted drive time as a starting point, not a guarantee. Which Airport Is Closest to Toronto, and Which One Should You Use

There is no single answer to which airport is closest to Toronto, because “closest” depends on whether you mean drive time, flight options, or fare. Billy Bishop is closest by distance, effectively downtown. Pearson has the most flights and the widest route network by a large margin. Hamilton is the calmest option inside an hour’s drive.
