The Mill is a restored 19th-century gristmill on the Grand River at 77 West Mill Street. The site goes back to 1832, when Captain William Gilkison bought the land and built a sawmill; it ran as a sawmill, distillery and flour mill until 1974, then sat as the Elora Mill Inn until it closed in 2010. Pearle Hospitality, the Ciancone family company, spent about seven years and $27 million rebuilding it and reopened in June 2018. It now holds 30 suites, each with original limestone mill walls, soaker tubs and seasonal fireplaces. Getting a group there from Toronto is the one piece the hotel leaves to you.

How to Get to Elora Mill from Toronto

Elora is about 130 km from downtown Toronto, roughly an hour and 40 minutes door to door in normal traffic. The usual route is Highway 401 west to Highway 6 north through Guelph, then Wellington Road 7 into Elora. From Guelph it is about 35 minutes; from Kitchener-Waterloo about 45 minutes. The closest airport is Toronto Pearson, YYZ, about an hour and 40 from the village. Region of Waterloo Airport, YKF, near Breslau is the nearest regional field but handles limited service.

The drive itself is the case for a chauffeur. Highway 6 north of the 401 is a fast two-lane road with passing sections, and after a wedding or a long dinner it is the last place you want a guest behind the wheel. Elora Gorge and What Else to See

Two Grand River Conservation Authority sites anchor the village. The Elora Gorge Conservation Area at 7400 Wellington County Road 21 has limestone cliffs up to 22 metres above the river, riverside trails, and a tubing run from mid-June to the end of September on timed, online-only tickets. The Elora Quarry at 319 Wellington County Road 18, a former quarry the GRCA opened to the public in 1976, is a two-acre spring-fed swimming hole with a small sandy beach, 12-metre walls and two four-hour swim sessions a day, no cliff jumping, tickets online in advance. Both lots fill fast on a hot weekend, which is the case for one vehicle and a driver who handles the parking.

The Grand River gorge is the reason the village exists and the reason most people first hear of it. The Elora Gorge Conservation Area has limestone cliffs that rise about 22 metres above the water. In summer the river fills with tubers; the conservation area runs a tubing operation through the gorge, and it is one of the few places in southern Ontario you can float a real river canyon. A short drive away, the Elora Quarry is a spring-fed swimming hole inside old quarry walls, busy and beautiful on a hot afternoon. Both are seasonal and both draw crowds, so parking near either fills early.

Things to Do in Elora and Fergus

The Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games takes over the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex on Belsyde Avenue each August, running August 7 to 9 in 2026. Founded in 1946, it is one of the largest Scottish festivals outside Scotland and Cape Breton, with caber tossing, pipe bands and Highland dancing. In the villages you have the Elora Mews shops, the Elora Brewing Company, and the Wellington County Museum and Archives in Aboyne, an 1877 Italianate stone building that served as the county House of Industry and is now a National Historic Site. Winter Trips to Elora and the Gorge

Elora does not close in winter. The gorge trails stay open for winter hiking, an 8.3-kilometre loop with about 106 metres of climb, when the cliffs frost over, and One Axe Pursuits runs beginner ice-climbing courses on a 20-metre ice wall built over the gorge edge. The village adds outdoor skating at Bissell Park and the Elora Christmas Market through mid-November and December. Winter is also when Highway 6 north of the 401 is least forgiving after dark, so a chauffeured run is the safe way up and back.
